Columbia River American Shad
Columbia Rive American Shad

It's June 1st, which means Shadfest 2025 is underway! Every spring, several million American Shad make their way to the Columbia River. The run really peacks about mid June so now is the time to get out there! I went on June 1st and although the shad run is still building, I was abel to catch several! I hope to make it out a few more times between now and the end of the month.

Shadiest 2025!
Shadfest 2025 is on NOW!

Shad are a blast to catch, some people enjoy eating them, others prefer catch and release, and some use them as excellent crab bait. No matter your preference, catching them is lots of fun. This is definitely one of the top 10 kid-friendly fisheries in the PNW, so gather your kids, shad gear, net, and cooler, and head to the Columbia to join in the fishing excitement.

Quick Facts

Both the Willamette River and the Columbia experience a fantastic Shad run.

There's plenty of bank access for shad fishermen near Bonneville Dam on trhe Washington side.

Gear:

Rod & Reel: Any spinning or casting rod and reel will work, but I prefer a 9-foot medium-light action spinning rod.

Weight: The weight you use depends on river flow and depth, so bring a selection from 1/4 to 1 oz.

Lure: Shad darts and size 0 Dick Nite spoons are my favorites—choose your color!

Set Up:

  1. Tie a 3-way snap swivel to your main line.

  2. Attach an 18 to 30-inch leader to the other end of the swivel.

  3. Tie your lure to the end of the leader.

  4. Attach your weight to the snap on the 3-way swivel.

Technique

This is basic drift fishing. Cast out towards 10:30 to 11:00 across the river, allow your lead a few seconds to sink, and then start a slow retrieve, letting your lure "swing" across what I call the SHAD ZONE!

That's it—now get out there and join the fun at Shadfest 2025!
